Debate: Grassroots Insurgency from the Left and Right
November 28, 2017 @ 4:00 am - 5:30 am
As the Democratic Party struggles to realign under the scandals and losses of 2016, the GOP has begun a full-scale abandonment of its small government roots in pursuit of Trump-led nationalism and Bannon-speared bombast. With both party establishments giving way to a polarized electorate, grassroots insurgents from the Left and the Right have forced the parties to face, for once and for all, a reassessment of the fundamental ideas which once united us but now threaten to divide us. Brought to you by Trojans for Liberty, a division of Young Americans for Liberty, and facilitated by the USC Annenberg School Center on Communication Leadership and Policy, Grassroots Insurgency from the Left and Right features a debate of ideas between U.S. Senate candidates Pat Harris and Austin Petersen. Does the Democratic Party stand for unconditional inclusion or intersectionality? Should the government promote policies to make healthcare affordable, or is healthcare a right? Are Trump’s culture wars specific to his leadership style, or will they become the future of the Republican Party? Does “America First” mean that we lead the world order, or do we abandon it for protectionism?
Pat Harris is a criminal defense attorney and progressive Democrat challenging Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat. Harris represented Susan McDougal in the Whitewater controversy and later co-authored her New York Times bestselling book about the ordeal.
Austen Petersen is a libertarian commentator and CEO of Stonegait LLC, running in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Missouri with the hopes of unseating current Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill. He was the runner-up for the Libertarian Party nomination for presidential candidate in 2016.
The debate will run from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28 in the forum of Wallis Annenberg Hall at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Complimentary lunch will be provided.
